Diante disso, seus pais optaram por uma solu\u00e7\u00e3o estrat\u00e9gica: inscrev\u00ea-lo no mosteiro agostiniano de Santo Tom\u00e1s, em Brno. Ali havia uma biblioteca robusta, hortas experimentais, estufas bem cuidadas e contato com intelectuais interessados nas ci\u00eancias naturais. Al\u00e9m disso, teve acesso a uma forma\u00e7\u00e3o s\u00f3lida em filosofia e teologia, o que ampliou sua capacidade anal\u00edtica e seu rigor metodol\u00f3gico.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color has-medium-font-size wp-elements-e5cd38d6967016b8cc7a30382a45261e wp-block-paragraph\">Mais tarde, foi enviado ao Instituto de Filosofia de Olomouc e, depois, \u00e0 Universidade de Viena. Nessa \u00faltima, entre 1851 e 1853, estudou f\u00edsica com Christian Doppler e bot\u00e2nica com Franz Unger, dois cientistas de renome. Doppler, por exemplo, formulou o famoso efeito que leva seu nome. Escolheu as ervilhas de jardim (<em>Pisum sativum<\/em>) como modelo. N\u00e3o por acaso. As ervilhas tinham ciclos curtos, m\u00faltiplas variedades e caracter\u00edsticas bem definidas, como cor e textura das sementes, cor das flores, forma das vagens e altura da planta. Al\u00e9m disso, podiam ser autofecundadas ou cruzadas manualmente, o que oferecia controle experimental.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Uma vida modesta, uma heran\u00e7a imortal<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color has-medium-font-size wp-elements-c2d4c5f553b2df7cb7a77b5d75bae06e wp-block-paragraph\">Durante oito anos, entre 1856 e 1863, Mendel cultivou e analisou cerca de 28 mil plantas. Anotava com min\u00facia os resultados de cada gera\u00e7\u00e3o, usando c\u00e1lculos estat\u00edsticos para entender os padr\u00f5es de transmiss\u00e3o dos tra\u00e7os. Dessa forma, percebeu que certas caracter\u00edsticas n\u00e3o se dilu\u00edam com o tempo, como propunha a teoria da heran\u00e7a por mistura, ainda popular em sua \u00e9poca.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color has-medium-font-size wp-elements-900ed658516fadf4407f788504bd5d88 wp-block-paragraph\">Ao contr\u00e1rio, ele observou que as caracter\u00edsticas eram transmitidas de forma discreta, em unidades que mais tarde seriam chamadas de genes. Desenvolveu assim tr\u00eas princ\u00edpios fundamentais: o da segrega\u00e7\u00e3o, o da domin\u00e2ncia e o da distribui\u00e7\u00e3o independente. Mandou c\u00f3pias para importantes cientistas da \u00e9poca, incluindo Karl Wilhelm von N\u00e4geli, bot\u00e2nico renomado. Contudo, a recep\u00e7\u00e3o foi fria. A comunidade cient\u00edfica ainda estava profundamente influenciada pelas ideias de heran\u00e7a misturada e pela aus\u00eancia de conhecimento sobre mecanismos celulares, como os cromossomos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color has-medium-font-size wp-elements-e38c12cb1808bc9d7543610cec791145 wp-block-paragraph\">Durante os anos seguintes, Mendel n\u00e3o voltou a realizar grandes experimentos. Passou a se dedicar \u00e0 vida administrativa como abade do mosteiro.
