Ao longo de d\u00e9cadas \u2014 ou mesmo s\u00e9culos \u2014 e sob condi\u00e7\u00f5es ambientais favor\u00e1veis, essas forma\u00e7\u00f5es submersas podem crescer at\u00e9 emergir como ilhas ou se desenvolver em estruturas circulares conhecidas como at\u00f3is (Castro &amp; Huber, 2000).<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u2022&nbsp;<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">A Grande Barreira de Corais<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\"><strong>Apesar dos recifes de coral serem menos de 1\u00a0% da \u00e1rea total de oceanos do mundo, aproximadamente metade de todas as esp\u00e9cies conhecidas de peixes marinhos encontram-se concentrados nestas \u00e1guas tropicais.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Entre as aproximadamente 48.000 esp\u00e9cies reconhecidas de vertebrados, mais da metade \u2014 cerca de 24.600 \u2014 s\u00e3o peixes, dos quais mais de 60% habitam exclusivamente ambientes marinhos (Nybakken, 1997). Os recifes de coral, portanto, desempenham papel vital como abrigos e zonas de alimenta\u00e7\u00e3o, sustentando uma biodiversidade marinha exuberante.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Estrutura&nbsp;<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-6d50051ee5a4ed75859362af1e849236\">A estrutura do recife \u00e9 formada, principalmente, por dep\u00f3sitos de carbonato de c\u00e1lcio produzidos por sucessivas gera\u00e7\u00f5es de organismos construtores, como corais, algas coralinas e outros invertebrados. \u00c0 medida que os corais crescem, cada novo p\u00f3lipo se assenta sobre o esqueleto calcificado de seus predecessores, criando uma matriz s\u00f3lida e intricada. Essa base viva \u00e9 constantemente remodelada por for\u00e7as f\u00edsicas \u2014 como a a\u00e7\u00e3o das ondas \u2014 e por organismos bioerosivos, como o peixe-papagaio, os ouri\u00e7os-do-mar e determinadas esponjas, que fragmentam os esqueletos mortos e ajudam a preench\u00ea-los nos interst\u00edcios da estrutura (Veron, 2000).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-d16571829f6072848677dda2b373f394\">Um dos principais elementos que garantem a coes\u00e3o f\u00edsica dos recifes s\u00e3o as algas coralinas, particularmente abundantes nas zonas mais expostas \u00e0 for\u00e7a das ondas. Essas algas, pertencentes ao grupo das rod\u00f3fitas, depositam camadas de calc\u00e1rio ao longo da superf\u00edcie do recife, funcionando como um cimento natural. Nessas \u00e1reas, os corais t\u00eam condi\u00e7\u00f5es mais est\u00e1veis para depositar grandes quantidades de carbonato de c\u00e1lcio e gerar as formas complexas que favorecem a alta diversidade de esp\u00e9cies associadas, incluindo moluscos, crust\u00e1ceos e centenas de esp\u00e9cies de peixes (Spalding et al., 2001).<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u2022&nbsp;<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/biologo.com.br\/bio\/documentario-orcas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Document\u00e1rio Orcas<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size\">Outras caracter\u00edsticas<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-a0b2a4793182a0b654af54af40cfc34c\">A distribui\u00e7\u00e3o dos recifes de coral \u00e9, no entanto, limitada por fatores oceanogr\u00e1ficos. Ao longo das costas ocidentais das Am\u00e9ricas e da \u00c1frica, por exemplo, os recifes s\u00e3o escassos ou ausentes devido \u00e0 ressurg\u00eancia de \u00e1guas frias e ricas em nutrientes, associada \u00e0s correntes de Humboldt e de Benguela. Essa crosta, composta em grande parte por algas calc\u00e1rias, atua como uma barreira contra a for\u00e7a destrutiva das ondas, protegendo as esp\u00e9cies formadoras do recife e estabilizando a borda da estrutura (Castro &amp; Huber, 2000).
