Por muito tempo, acreditou-se que os genes, compostos por DNA, constitu\u00edam o roteiro fixo que determinava o destino de cada c\u00e9lula, tecido e organismo. Contudo, ao longo das \u00faltimas d\u00e9cadas, tornou-se evidente que essa vis\u00e3o era incompleta. Ele imaginava um \u201cpaisagem epigen\u00e9tica\u201d, na qual as c\u00e9lulas, como bolas rolando por colinas, percorriam trajet\u00f3rias determinadas tanto por sua heran\u00e7a gen\u00e9tica quanto por fatores externos.
