Sua distribui\u00e7\u00e3o se estendia por vastas \u00e1reas costeiras do Pac\u00edfico Norte. Durante os per\u00edodos glaciais, o recuo dos mares e o resfriamento global reduziram severamente os habitats adequados. Assim, a popula\u00e7\u00e3o fragmentou-se.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color has-medium-font-size wp-elements-d9225c028f4d85f871e3c9e6d9f8a43d\">Com a eleva\u00e7\u00e3o do n\u00edvel do mar, h\u00e1 cerca de 5.000 anos, a esp\u00e9cie j\u00e1 se encontrava em decl\u00ednio acentuado. O tamanho populacional m\u00ednimo e a baixa variabilidade gen\u00e9tica indicavam um v\u00f3rtice de extin\u00e7\u00e3o. A influ\u00eancia humana, por\u00e9m, acelerou esse processo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\"><em>Hydrodamalis gigas<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color has-medium-font-size wp-elements-9b174952c2939567f6bdf20356753e5f\">Pertencente \u00e0 ordem Sirenia, destacava-se como um colosso herb\u00edvoro dos mares sub\u00e1rticos, atingindo impressionantes 9 metros de comprimento e cerca de 10 toneladas de peso. Sua pele, espessa, enrugada e acinzentada, lembrava a textura da casca de uma \u00e1rvore e funcionava como eficaz prote\u00e7\u00e3o t\u00e9rmica contra as \u00e1guas frias do Pac\u00edfico Norte. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color has-medium-font-size wp-elements-7216eee1c189a3ae1d13497e08141048\">Embora sua movimenta\u00e7\u00e3o fosse lenta e seu comportamento notoriamente d\u00f3cil, vivia em grupos coesos e alimentava-se exclusivamente de <em>kelps<\/em>, que raspava do fundo com seus grandes l\u00e1bios c\u00f3rneos. Por essa raz\u00e3o, sua presen\u00e7a contribu\u00eda significativamente para o equil\u00edbrio das florestas de algas, favorecendo a entrada de luz e o recrutamento vegetal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color has-medium-font-size wp-elements-301b443e85c82ec83d29edbd2cfb340d\"><strong>Fatores que levaram \u00e0 extin\u00e7\u00e3o da vaca-marinha-de-steller<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-b6c95aa1264b83e56fce9eff751b88bc\">A ecologia da regi\u00e3o contribu\u00eda para o decl\u00ednio das popula\u00e7\u00f5es. A lontra-marinha (<em>Enhydra lutris<\/em>), por exemplo, \u00e9 uma <a href=\"https:\/\/biologo.com.br\/bio\/especie-chave-os-pilares-invisiveis-da-vida\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">esp\u00e9cie-chave<\/span><\/a>. Ao controlar os ouri\u00e7os-do-mar, protege as florestas de algas. Quando sua popula\u00e7\u00e3o caiu nas Ilhas Aleutas, os ouri\u00e7os proliferaram. A esp\u00e9cie foi descrita pela primeira vez pelo naturalista alem\u00e3o Georg Steller em 1741, numa altura em que j\u00e1 era possivelmente bastante rara.
