Elas participam da regenera\u00e7\u00e3o natural ao dispersar sementes de frutos grandes, como castanhas e jatob\u00e1s, que outros animais n\u00e3o conseguem carregar (Peres &amp; Baider, 1997). Assim, cada fruto transportado ou enterrado transforma-se em um elo vivo entre as plantas e os <a href=\"https:\/\/biologo.com.br\/bio\/mamiferos-mestres-da-adaptacao\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">mam\u00edferos<\/span><\/a>. Elas enterram sementes em locais distintos, pr\u00e1tica conhecida como <em>scatterhoarding<\/em>, criando reservas alimentares para o futuro. Contudo, parte dessas sementes \u00e9 esquecida e acaba germinando, originando novas \u00e1rvores (Forget, 1993). Como consequ\u00eancia, \u00e1rvores que dependem exclusivamente desses roedores para dispers\u00e3o sofrem decl\u00ednios populacionais, afetando toda a cadeia ecol\u00f3gica.&lt;\/p&gt;\n&lt;p&gt;Al\u00e9m disso, a perda das cutias compromete servi\u00e7os ecossist\u00eamicos vitais, como a regenera\u00e7\u00e3o de florestas degradadas e o sequestro de carbono. A aus\u00eancia desses animais desencadeia um efeito cascata ecol\u00f3gico, no qual a extin\u00e7\u00e3o local de um roedor desencadeia desequil\u00edbrios em v\u00e1rias camadas da biota florestal (Wright et al., 2000).&lt;\/p&gt;\n&lt;p&gt;Nesse contexto, programas de conserva\u00e7\u00e3o que considerem a cutia como esp\u00e9cie-chave tornam-se urgentes. A cria\u00e7\u00e3o de corredores ecol\u00f3gicos, o manejo sustent\u00e1vel de florestas e a proibi\u00e7\u00e3o efetiva da ca\u00e7a s\u00e3o medidas fundamentais para preservar suas popula\u00e7\u00f5es. Al\u00e9m disso, estudos gen\u00e9ticos recentes t\u00eam sugerido que as popula\u00e7\u00f5es de Dasyprocta apresentam diversidade significativa entre regi\u00f5es, o que refor\u00e7a a import\u00e2ncia de estrat\u00e9gias de conserva\u00e7\u00e3o localizadas (Emmons &amp;#038; Feer, 1997).&lt;\/p&gt;\n&lt;p&gt;A valoriza\u00e7\u00e3o das cutias vai al\u00e9m da biologia. Elas simbolizam a interdepend\u00eancia entre esp\u00e9cies e a delicada teia de rela\u00e7\u00f5es que mant\u00e9m a vida nas florestas tropicais. Esse comportamento revela n\u00e3o apenas mem\u00f3ria espacial apurada, mas tamb\u00e9m uma forma de estrat\u00e9gia ecol\u00f3gica refinada.
