Atrav\u00e9s da decomposi\u00e7\u00e3o da mat\u00e9ria org\u00e2nica transportada pelos solos, microrganismos aqu\u00e1ticos liberam CO\u2082 e CH\u2084 em processos conhecidos como respira\u00e7\u00e3o heterotr\u00f3fica e metanog\u00eanese (Battin et al., 2008). Isso se deve \u00e0s temperaturas elevadas e \u00e0 grande disponibilidade de mat\u00e9ria org\u00e2nica oriunda da floresta (Abril et al., 2014). Cada trecho possui caracter\u00edsticas pr\u00f3prias, influenciadas por fatores como velocidade da corrente, profundidade, cobertura vegetal e uso do solo nas margens. A urbaniza\u00e7\u00e3o, por exemplo, aumenta a carga de nutrientes e reduz a oxigena\u00e7\u00e3o, alterando a din\u00e2mica respirat\u00f3ria e favorecendo a produ\u00e7\u00e3o de metano. Portanto, a sa\u00fade biol\u00f3gica e qu\u00edmica dos rios \u00e9 determinante para sua contribui\u00e7\u00e3o ao ciclo do carbono.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span><strong style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0); font-family: &quot;courier new&quot;, courier, monospace; font-size: 14pt; font-weight: bold;\">Conex\u00f5es entre a terra e a \u00e1gua<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-cm-color-6-color has-text-color has-link-color has-medium-font-size wp-elements-f4788a7aba02568295859a1e555ef323 wp-block-paragraph\">Al\u00e9m da decomposi\u00e7\u00e3o direta, os ecossistemas aqu\u00e1ticos desempenham papel essencial como pontes biogeoqu\u00edmicas entre ambientes terrestres e oce\u00e2nicos. A mat\u00e9ria org\u00e2nica gerada nas florestas, ao ser transportada para os rios, pode seguir dois caminhos: ser mineralizada em CO\u2082 e CH\u2084 ou ser exportada para os oceanos, onde se tornar\u00e1 parte do carbono marinho (Regnier et al., 2013).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-cm-color-6-color has-text-color has-link-color has-medium-font-size wp-elements-07df64014c13dc570e3d2ec6d62d27db wp-block-paragraph\">Contudo, apenas cerca de um ter\u00e7o do carbono fluvial chega ao mar. O restante \u00e9 emitido para a atmosfera ou depositado nos sedimentos, onde pode ficar aprisionado por milhares de anos (Aufdenkampe et al., 2011).
