A enzima liga-se \u00e0 cadeia de DNA e desliza sobre esta, quebrando as liga\u00e7\u00f5es entre as duas cadeias de nucle\u00f3tidos &#8211; liga\u00e7\u00f5es de hidrog\u00eanio &#8211; ficando ent\u00e3o as duas cadeias de DNA separadas. Em seguida, os nucleot\u00eddeos livres existentes no n\u00facleo ligam-se, por complementaridade de bases, \u00e0 cadeia de DNA. De uma cadeia original de DNA formam-se duas. A replica\u00e7\u00e3o do DNA \u00e9 o processo de auto-duplica\u00e7\u00e3o do material gen\u00e9tico, mantendo o padr\u00e3o de heran\u00e7a ao longo das gera\u00e7\u00f5es.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Cada cadeia do DNA \u00e9 duplicada formando uma fita h\u00edbrida, isto \u00e9, a cadeia velha pareia com a cadeia nova formando um novo DNA; de uma mol\u00e9cula de DNA formam-se duas outras iguais a ela. Cada DNA rec\u00e9m formado possui uma das cadeias da mol\u00e9cula-m\u00e3e, por isso o nome semi-conservativa.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Ao mesmo tempo em que a helicase vai abrindo a mol\u00e9cula de DNA, outra enzima chamada polimerase liga um grupo de nucleot\u00eddeos que se pareiam com os nucleot\u00eddeos da mol\u00e9cula-m\u00e3e.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Al\u00e9m da capacidade de duplica\u00e7\u00e3o, o DNA tamb\u00e9m \u00e9 respons\u00e1vel pela s\u00edntese de outro \u00e1cido nucleico muito importante para a c\u00e9lula: o \u00e1cido ribonucleico ou RNA. Da mesma forma que o DNA, o RNA tamb\u00e9m \u00e9 uma mol\u00e9cula grande, formada por v\u00e1rias partes menores chamadas nucleot\u00eddeos.
