No entanto, a observa\u00e7\u00e3o de f\u00f3sseis remonta \u00e0 Antiguidade. Com toda a certeza, em tanto tempo assim esta hist\u00f3ria \u00e9 muito rica em acontecimentos e descobertas extraordin\u00e1rias, como vamos ver abaixo. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-family: 'courier new', courier, monospace; font-size: 24pt; color: #000000;\"><strong>Hist\u00f3ria da Paleontologia<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Ainda no s\u00e9culo VI a.C., o fil\u00f3sofo grego Xen\u00f3fanes de C\u00f3lofon percebeu, com grande acuidade, que conchas marinhas incrustadas em rochas continentais eram ind\u00edcios de que aquelas terras, outrora, estiveram submersas. Essa intui\u00e7\u00e3o marcou um dos primeiros registros de racioc\u00ednio geol\u00f3gico fundamentado em f\u00f3sseis (Mayor, 2000).<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: 'courier new', courier, monospace;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Hist\u00f3ria Resumida da Paleontologia<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-73729e22df0fb884881f669d10e747fe\">J\u00e1 no s\u00e9culo V a.C., o historiador Xanthus da L\u00eddia tamb\u00e9m notou a presen\u00e7a de f\u00f3sseis longe do mar e sugeriu, com not\u00e1vel antecipa\u00e7\u00e3o, que os limites entre terra e oceano mudavam com o tempo. Leonardo da Vinci (1452\u20131519), por exemplo, rejeitou a hip\u00f3tese de que f\u00f3sseis se formavam por \u201cvirtudes lapidificantes da Terra\u201d. Ao comparar dentes de tubar\u00e3o modernos com f\u00f3sseis conhecidos como \u201cl\u00ednguas de pedra\u201d, Steno reconheceu sua origem biol\u00f3gica. Seu trabalho, publicado em 1669, revolucionou a compreens\u00e3o da forma\u00e7\u00e3o das rochas e da presen\u00e7a de f\u00f3sseis nelas (Cutler, 2003).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Durante o s\u00e9culo XVI, figuras como Conrad Gesner e Georg Agricola reuniram, descreveram e organizaram cole\u00e7\u00f5es de f\u00f3sseis com base em suas propriedades f\u00edsicas, muitas vezes ignorando sua origem org\u00e2nica. Nessa \u00e9poca, predominavam explica\u00e7\u00f5es filos\u00f3ficas baseadas em doutrinas aristot\u00e9licas ou neoplat\u00f4nicas, segundo as quais os f\u00f3sseis seriam forma\u00e7\u00f5es minerais imitativas, moldadas por for\u00e7as misteriosas da natureza (Rudwick, 1976).<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: 'courier new', courier, monospace;\"><strong>Anatomia comparada<\/strong><\/span><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-bfc25ce8d8225bfc751f80513dc30ca8\">Entretanto, ao longo do s\u00e9culo XVII, a vis\u00e3o cient\u00edfica come\u00e7ou a se afirmar. Em 1665, Robert Hooke defendeu que f\u00f3sseis eram evid\u00eancias de formas de vida extintas, como registrado em sua obra <em>Micrographia<\/em>. No mesmo per\u00edodo, Athanasius Kircher atribuiu ossadas f\u00f3sseis a ra\u00e7as humanas de gigantes, ainda imerso em interpreta\u00e7\u00f5es mitol\u00f3gicas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-6f011eba13b3a88f2a892c94b202986d\">A grande virada conceitual ocorreu com Georges Cuvier (1769\u20131832), fundador da anatomia comparada. Cuvier demonstrou que f\u00f3sseis pertenciam a esp\u00e9cies extintas e que essas extin\u00e7\u00f5es eram eventos naturais e recorrentes. Sua an\u00e1lise dos f\u00f3sseis de mamutes, por exemplo, descartou definitivamente a hip\u00f3tese de que tais criaturas ainda vagassem por regi\u00f5es inexploradas (Cuvier, 1812). Trabalhos como os de William Smith, com seus mapas geol\u00f3gicos baseados em f\u00f3sseis-guia, e a teoria da evolu\u00e7\u00e3o por sele\u00e7\u00e3o natural proposta por <a href=\"https:\/\/biologo.com.br\/bio\/charles-darwin\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Charles Darwin<\/span><\/a> em 1859, refor\u00e7aram a import\u00e2ncia dos f\u00f3sseis como testemunhos da hist\u00f3ria da vida. A descoberta de formas transicionais, como o <em>Archaeopteryx<\/em>, forneceu evid\u00eancias cruciais da ancestralidade comum entre aves e r\u00e9pteis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-f3f2ff51e013e3ee5728fd34dba84a9a\">Durante o s\u00e9culo XX, o campo da paleontologia expandiu-se ainda mais. F\u00f3sseis encontrados na China, particularmente nas forma\u00e7\u00f5es de Liaoning, trouxeram revela\u00e7\u00f5es sobre a evolu\u00e7\u00e3o das penas, da avia\u00e7\u00e3o nas aves primitivas e at\u00e9 da biologia reprodutiva de dinossauros (Xu et al., 2000). Selden<\/span><\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-0e64f51c5fc3c5b30eb3a79365e404a3\">Por outro lado, descobertas sobre extin\u00e7\u00f5es em massa, como a do fim do Cret\u00e1ceo h\u00e1 66 milh\u00f5es de anos \u2014 possivelmente causada por um impacto de asteroide (Alvarez et al., 1980) \u2014 reacenderam o debate sobre os fatores que moldam a biodiversidade ao longo do tempo geol\u00f3gico. Esses eventos catastr\u00f3ficos passaram a ser vistos como for\u00e7as importantes, ao lado da sele\u00e7\u00e3o natural, na dire\u00e7\u00e3o evolutiva.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-a3ac32a99765487a09d26d3fa498db36\">Com a s\u00edntese evolutiva moderna, desenvolvida entre as d\u00e9cadas de 1930 e 1950, a paleontologia passou a dialogar diretamente com a gen\u00e9tica. A obra de <a href=\"https:\/\/biologo.com.br\/bio\/gregor-mendel\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Gregor Mendel<\/span><\/a>, redescoberta no in\u00edcio do s\u00e9culo XX, contribuiu para a compreens\u00e3o da heran\u00e7a gen\u00e9tica e da varia\u00e7\u00e3o nas popula\u00e7\u00f5es.
