Suas c\u00e9lulas, embora organizadas funcionalmente, n\u00e3o est\u00e3o unidas por l\u00e2mina basal \u2013 estrutura caracter\u00edstica dos tecidos epiteliais de organismos mais complexos (Simion et al., 2017). Al\u00e9m disso, carecem de sistema nervoso, \u00f3rg\u00e3os internos e m\u00fasculos. Permanecem fixas ao substrato, sem qualquer capacidade de locomo\u00e7\u00e3o. Podem apresentar tr\u00eas formas de organiza\u00e7\u00e3o: asconoide, siconoide ou leuconoide, sendo as asconoides as mais simples e as leuconoides as mais complexas (Ruppert et al., 2005).<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>Classe Hexactinellida<\/em> &#8211; Conhecidas como esponjas v\u00edtreas, possuem esp\u00edculas silicosas com seis raios. S\u00e3o predominantemente encontradas em grandes profundidades e apresentam uma estrutura sincicial \u2014 ou seja, um tecido com muitos n\u00facleos compartilhando o mesmo citoplasma. A maioria \u00e9 siconoide ou leuconoide (Leys et al., 2007)<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>Classe Demospongiae<\/em> &#8211; Inegavelmente<\/span> t<span style=\"color: #000000;\">rata-se da maior e mais diversificada classe, contendo cerca de 90% de todas as esp\u00e9cies de esponjas. Seu esqueleto \u00e9 composto por espongina (uma prote\u00edna fibrosa) com ou sem esp\u00edculas de s\u00edlica. Todas s\u00e3o leuconoides, o que garante maior complexidade estrutural e efici\u00eancia de filtra\u00e7\u00e3o (Hooper &amp; Van Soest, 2002).<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>Classe Homoscleromorpha<\/em> &#8211; Anteriormente inclu\u00eddas nos Demospongiae, essas esponjas foram recentemente reconhecidas como uma classe separada devido \u00e0 presen\u00e7a de caracter\u00edsticas \u00fanicas, como uma membrana basal epitelial verdadeira e pinac\u00f3citos ciliados. Tamb\u00e9m possuem organiza\u00e7\u00e3o leuconoide (Gazave et al., 2012).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Evolu\u00e7\u00e3o e registros f\u00f3sseis<span style=\"color: #999999;\"> &#8211;&nbsp;Por\u00edferos<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-7f5a7c7f63d64ce2e7f989604d7467c4\">Do ponto de vista evolutivo, os por\u00edferos representam uma linhagem basal dos metazo\u00e1rios. Desse modo, testes gen\u00e9ticos e filogenias moleculares indicam que eles divergiram muito cedo na hist\u00f3ria evolutiva dos animais. A estrutura simples de seu corpo, aliada \u00e0 presen\u00e7a de genes compartilhados com grupos mais complexos, contribui para o entendimento da transi\u00e7\u00e3o entre unicelulares e organismos multicelulares (King et al., 2008).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-868af8032d5621ce33eb175adfad50ad\">O registro f\u00f3ssil dos por\u00edferos remonta ao final do Neoproterozoico, h\u00e1 cerca de 600 milh\u00f5es de anos. Apesar disso, f\u00f3sseis bem preservados s\u00e3o raros, em parte devido \u00e0 fragilidade das estruturas esquel\u00e9ticas dessas criaturas. Isto \u00e9, essa esponja ramificada revela como j\u00e1 no in\u00edcio da era Paleozoica existiam formas relativamente complexas de esponjas (Rigby, 1986). Durante o Jur\u00e1ssico, f\u00f3sseis bem preservados surgiram nos Alpes europeus, indicando que o grupo continuou diversificando-se ap\u00f3s eventos de extin\u00e7\u00e3o.
