S\u00e3o seres vivos unicelulares cuja\u00a0maior parte vive em mares de \u00e1guas frias, mas h\u00e1 esp\u00e9cies de agua doce.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\">Muitas flutuam nos mares e lagos, representando parcela importante do <a href=\"https:\/\/biologo.com.br\/bio\/tubarao-baleia\/\">fitopl\u00e2ncton<\/a>. Isso confere a muitas esp\u00e9cies de diatom\u00e1ceas um aspecto iridescente e brilhante.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">A iridesc\u00eancia das carapa\u00e7as silicosas, associada aos pigmentos presentes, d\u00e1 a essas algas diferentes colora\u00e7\u00f5es, que v\u00e3o do dourado ao marrom-esverdeado. As principais subst\u00e2ncias de reserva das diatom\u00e1ceas s\u00e3o \u00f3leos, que em certas esp\u00e9cies contribuem para facilitar a flutua\u00e7\u00e3o.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt; font-family: 'courier new', courier, monospace;\"><strong> Terras de diatom\u00e1ceas<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Em certas regi\u00f5es do funfo marinho as carapa\u00e7as de diatom\u00e1ceas acumularam-se ao longo de milhares de anos, formando camadas rochosas compactas conhecidas como terras de diatom\u00e1ceas (ou diatomito). As terras de diatom\u00e1ceas s\u00e3o utilizadas desde a Antiguidade como material de constru\u00e7\u00e3o, geralmente misturadas \u00e0 cal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Alguns exemplos de obras constru\u00eddas com terras de diatom\u00e1ceas e que ainda se conservam s\u00e3o os aquedutos de Roma, os portos de Alexandria e o canal de Suez. No Cret\u00e1cio a flora de diatom\u00e1ceas \u00e9 muito abundante e h\u00e1 exemplos de forma\u00e7\u00f5es rochosas &#8211; os diatomitos &#8211; constitu\u00eddas quase inteiramente de carapa\u00e7as de diatom\u00e1ceas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Tamb\u00e9m s\u00e3o conhecidas por algas douradas, porque possuem uma carapa\u00e7a r\u00edgida de tom dourado, as diatom\u00e1ceas s\u00e3o muito comuns em oceanos e mares.
