Fazendo passar uma solu\u00e7\u00e3o que continha bact\u00e9rias atrav\u00e9s desse filtro, as bact\u00e9rias ficavam nele retidas e a solu\u00e7\u00e3o filtrada obtida tornava-se est\u00e9ril.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> Em 1886, Adolf Mayer demonstrou que a doen\u00e7a do tabaco podia ser transmitida a plantas saud\u00e1veis pela inocula\u00e7\u00e3o com extratos de plantas doentes. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Em 1892, o bi\u00f3logo Dmitry Ivanovsky fez uso do filtro Chamberland para demonstrar que folhas de tabaco infectadas trituradas continuavam infectadas mesmo ap\u00f3s a filtragem. E em 1911, Peyton Rous transmitiu um tumor maligno de uma galinha para outra, descobrindo o v\u00edrus do sarcoma de Rous, e demonstrando que o c\u00e2ncer poderia ser transmitido por um v\u00edrus.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Em 1915, o bacteriologista Frederick William Twort ao tentar propagar o v\u00edrus da vacc\u00ednia num meio de cultura bacteriana observou que as col\u00f4nias morriam e que o agente dessa transforma\u00e7\u00e3o era infeccioso.
