Johannsen estudou o metabolismo da dorm\u00eancia e germina\u00e7\u00e3o em sementes, tub\u00e9rculos e bot\u00f5es. Ele foi capaz de mostrar que mesmo em popula\u00e7\u00f5es homozig\u00f3ticas para todas as caracter\u00edsticas (sem varia\u00e7\u00e3o gen\u00e9tica) o tamanho da semente seguia uma distribui\u00e7\u00e3o normal. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Isso foi atribu\u00eddo ao fornecimento de recursos \u00e0 planta-m\u00e3e e \u00e0 posi\u00e7\u00e3o das sementes nas vagens e das vagens na planta. Isso o levou a cunhar os termos fen\u00f3tipo e gen\u00f3tipo.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Ele criou os termos usando-os primeiro em seu livro <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a style=\"color: #000000; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cambridge.org\/core\/books\/elemente-der-exakten-erblichkeitslehre\/3967B2C6BF3FCCDABD81E6EE727146EC\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Elemente der exakten Erblichkeitslehre<\/em><\/a>.<\/span> Foi nesta obra que Johannsen introduziu o termo gene. Esse termo foi cunhado em oposi\u00e7\u00e3o ao ent\u00e3o comum <em>pangene<\/em> que se originou da teoria da pang\u00eanese de Darwin. Somente com a s\u00edntese moderna, foi estabelecido que a varia\u00e7\u00e3o precisava ser heredit\u00e1ria para atuar como mat\u00e9ria-prima para a sele\u00e7\u00e3o.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Tamb\u00e9m em 1905, Johannsen foi nomeado professor de fisiologia vegetal na Universidade de Copenhagen, tornando-se vice-reitor em 1917. Em dezembro de 1910, Johannsen foi convidado a fazer um discurso perante a Sociedade Americana de Naturalistas. Esta palestra foi publicada na <em>American Naturalist<\/em>. Em 1911 ele foi convidado a dar uma s\u00e9rie de quatro palestras na Columbia University.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Johannsen era um membro correspondente da Academia de Ci\u00eancias Naturais da Filad\u00e9lfia (eleito em 1915).
