Em condi\u00e7\u00f5es normais, as matas rip\u00e1rias resistem gra\u00e7as \u00e0 umidade do ambiente e de suas plantas. Mas essa prote\u00e7\u00e3o vem sendo reduzida \u2013 nesse bioma e em outros \u2013 por falta de manejo, mudan\u00e7as no regime de chuvas e pelo avan\u00e7o da agricultura, de acordo com estudos recentes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cAs imagens revelaram que o fogo matou 52% das \u00e1rvores adultas e 87% das jovens que cresciam na beira dos rios\u201d, explica o bi\u00f3logo Bernardo Flores, autor do artigo e pesquisador em est\u00e1gio de p\u00f3s-doutorado da Universidade Estadual de Campinas (Unicamp). A avalia\u00e7\u00e3o foi baseada em imagens da plataforma Google Earth que, com resolu\u00e7\u00e3o de 0,5 metro (m), permite identificar danos at\u00e9 na copa de uma \u00e1rvore, quando se compara fotos antes e depois do inc\u00eandio, na chapada dos Veadeiros. Os pesquisadores agora monitoram as \u00e1reas degradadas para verificar sua recupera\u00e7\u00e3o e detectar mudan\u00e7as na composi\u00e7\u00e3o de esp\u00e9cies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> Alguns dos locais queimados foram invadidos por plantas ex\u00f3ticas que crescem mais depressa, como o capim adotado pela agropecu\u00e1ria para alimentar o gado e plantas oportunistas, como cip\u00f3s, trepadeiras e samambaias nativas, que podem ter mais de 1 metro de altura. Um estudo feito em Mato Grosso sugere que a agricultura reduz a diversidade de \u00e1rvores e altera a composi\u00e7\u00e3o flor\u00edstica.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cAs faixas de florestas rip\u00e1rias que fazem fronteira com as planta\u00e7\u00f5es s\u00e3o particularmente empobrecidas em esp\u00e9cies arb\u00f3reas quando comparadas a florestas desse tipo que ficam dentro de uma \u00e1rea florestal\u201d, diz o bi\u00f3logo Leonardo Maracahipes-Santos. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Autor de artigo publicado na revista\u00a0<em>Biological Conservation<\/em>\u00a0em 20 de novembro, ele \u00e9 estudante de doutorado no\u00a0<em>campus<\/em>\u00a0de Nova Xavantina da Universidade do Estado de Mato Grosso (Unemat) e pesquisador do Instituto de Pesquisa Ambiental da Amaz\u00f4nia (Ipam).
